Myth & Theatre Festival
Date
June 2023
Location
Roy Hart Centre. Maleragues, France
Project Type
Professional Development
In June 2023, I attended Pantheatre’s professional development workshop, the Myth & Theatre Festival, at the Roy Hart Centre in Maleragues, France. This training was led primarily by Enrique Pardo and Linda Wise, who are both experts in their field, and was supplemented by a variety of other internationally acclaimed instructors, such as Pierre Francois Blanchard, Daniela Garcia, Ezra Faroque Khan, Amy Rome, Susan Bamford Caleo, and more.
I was initially introduced to the Roy Hart techniques by a professor and mentor, who recommended for an online workshop in 2021. I was blown away by the clear expertise in their field, even in the online formatting. I was incredibly challenged by the work done at the centre. I participated alongside artistic professionals from around the world, and learned so much from the instructors and participants alike. I was particularly challenged by the private training I took part in with Kaya M. Anderson. We focused on the development of range in pursuit of Roy Hart’s mission to push the human voice to the extremes of its range. Over the course of the workshop, my range improved by nearly an octave and a half, which was easily a highlight of the training for me.
In addition to the technical work, I also felt very rewarded by the networking I was able to do. I developed connections with artists from all over the world, and continue to maintain contact with them.
Since returning to Canada, and the Northwest Territories, I have consistently used the techniques I learned in my artistic practices as a theatre director. It’s been incredibly effective in pushing my actors in their work. I am eagerly looking forward to returning to the centre, and continuing the work I began in June.
Funding for this project was provided by the Canada Council for the Arts and the NWT Arts Association.
